Expanding your outdoor living space with a well-designed deck can transform your Spring and Summer experiences, providing an inviting area for relaxation, entertaining, and enjoying nature.
Back in 2021, we designed a HUGE deck that ran the length of our almost 3,000 sq ft house. I knew it would be great, but I was amazed at how much our deck changed our life with our family of 6. We were automatically outside more, using the backyard more, I landscaped more and the kids played more, and we simply ENJOYED our deck and yard more because of it!
A perfect deck balances functionality, style, and durability, while creating a seamless transition between your indoor and outdoor spaces – we often left the door OPEN because the deck became part of our Spring and Summer living room!
We were outside in the morning, and then outside again in the afternoon right after our daily quiet time. We literally transformed into creatures that spent HOURS outside, and this was while we were technically urban-living! It made it feel, “country,” and ultimately inspired us to go on our off grid adventure.
Thoughtful planning ensures your deck meets your needs while also enhancing the overall aesthetics of your home – so here are some basics from what I learned a few years ago —
1. Assess Your Space and Purpose

The first step in designing your deck is to evaluate the available space and determine how you intend to use it. Are you looking for a cozy nook for reading and morning coffee, or do you envision a spacious area for hosting large gatherings?
Defining the purpose of your deck will influence its size, layout, and features.
Measure your outdoor area to identify the best location for the deck, considering factors such as sunlight, shade, and access points from your home. We wanted natural lighting, but also the feel of shade. Ultimately we decided on clear, UV-light filtering plastic plexiglass panels, and the effect was bright and beautiful.
I’ve been under decks that had regular wood roofs and thought it was just too dark, my mind always craves light, so the clear panels were the best option (and you could still feel the difference of the sun being off your skin!).
2. Choose the Right Materials
The materials you select will significantly impact your deck’s longevity and appearance. Composite decking is a popular choice due to its durability, low maintenance, and resistance to weather and pests but it tends to be the most expensive.
Natural wood, like cedar or redwood, offers a timeless aesthetic but requires regular sealing and upkeep. For us, we didn’t mind at all, sealing and up-keeping the cedar, it was just so beautiful and added that bright pop that brightened the whole deck.
For a more eco-friendly option, consider recycled materials or sustainably sourced wood – just make sure to manually seal everything. Additionally, ensure your deck materials are slip-resistant for safety if possible.
3. Design Functional Zones
A well-designed deck incorporates different zones to cater to various activities. For example, you could create a dining area with a sturdy table and chairs, a lounge space with comfortable seating, and a grilling station for outdoor cooking.
For us – we incorporated ALL of these things onto our deck because it was large enough, and I had the idea in mind before we even started, what all I wanted to be able to do. You may want to look at a list to help decide what you want to plan
- Couch area
- S’mores fire pit
- Rugs and sheer curtains
- Small coffee tables
- Benches (for kids that are built in so they don’t topple over)
- Dining area with built in table or portable table and fold up chairs/benches
- BBQ area without roofing for safety
- Game playing area (weather proof storage for games and activities to do outside)
If space permits, adding multiple levels or platforms can enhance the visual appeal and allow for better organization of activities. This gets expensive though, but worth it if your budget can afford it.
4. Incorporate Built-In Features
Built-in elements can maximize the functionality and aesthetics of your deck. Benches with storage, planters, and railings with integrated lighting can enhance the space while keeping it clutter-free.
Consider adding a fire pit or outdoor heater to extend usability into cooler months. We used our small S’mores fire pit ALL THE TIME – it was wonderful!
A built-in pergola or awning provides shade and protection from the elements, making the deck more comfortable year-round.
5. Focus on Aesthetics and Flow
Your deck should complement your home’s architecture and blend with the surrounding landscape. Choose colors and finishes that align with your home’s exterior, and use natural elements like plants or stones to create harmony with the environment.
Ensure smooth transitions between your indoor and outdoor spaces, using sliding doors or wide steps for accessibility. I strategically put a beautiful outdoor rug down right where people walk out onto the deck and it gave a luxurious feel.
6. Plan for Durability and Maintenance
Weatherproofing is essential to maintain your deck’s longevity. Use weather-resistant materials and finishes to prevent warping, fading, or damage from moisture. Regular cleaning and inspections will keep your deck in top condition. If your area experiences harsh winters, consider installing a drainage system to prevent water pooling.
7. Prioritize Comfort and Ambiance

This was what really transformed our deck into our outdoor paradise! To make your deck truly inviting, include features like soft outdoor lighting, cozy cushions, or even a sound system for music. We used soft lights that turned on at night, as well as lanterns on the dining table and it created the BEST romantic/cozy effect all year long.
Potted plants, rugs, and decorative accents can personalize the space also, making it feel like an outdoor oasis.
By thoughtfully considering your needs, style, and maintenance preferences, you can design the perfect deck that not only expands your outdoor living space but also adds value and charm to your home.
Happy designing!
