Honey has been an intriguing active ingredient in many of the world’s top brand skincare lines like The Honey Mud mask by May Lindstrom Skin (for $95) or the more affordable option Honey Potion Plus by Farmacy ($38 on Amazon).
While these may seem a little pricey for such a common ingredient, you’ll be glad to know you can make your own decadent homemade face mask – and even tailor it to your own specific needs depending on what ingredients you include.
If putting the sticky, gooey substance on your face sounds confusing to you, keep reading to find out the secrets of this old-world treasure.
Honey is Surprisingly Good at Solving Many Problems
Benefits of honey masks or face wash:
- Relieves Redness
- Lightens and brightens Dark Spots
- Soothes and repairs Dryness or dehydrated skin
- Combats Dullness by Brightening skin
- Helps Acne-prone skin
- Soothes Eczema flair ups
One of the things I personally love about using honey in my skincare routine is that it is good for all skin types – including sensitive skin! Whether you have oily skin, dry skin, or acne-prone skin, the anti-inflammatory properties calm it down, even helping redness disappear.
Honey is also a natural exfoliator, gently removing dead skin cells while retaining your skin’s protective layer due to honey being a natural humectant, drawing moisture in from the air. Being a gentle physical and chemical exfoliator*, honey diminishes the appearance of fine lines over time.
If you suffer from dark spots, honey contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, giving it a gentle lightening effect that accumulates overtime with daily use.*
The natural presence of hydrogen peroxide also makes a honey mask a great tool for reducing acne scars and hyperpigmentation. This is the number one secret as to how honey gives you glowing skin – it brightens and lightens your skin overtime. Paired with a few simple ingredients like lemon juice and green tea, your DIY face mask will tackles those dark spots or dull skin.
Are you ready to start making your honey masks tailored to YOUR specific needs? Our recipes have both a, “simple,” type and a, “luxury,” type – so depending on your needs and budget, you can benefit from the amazing healing properties of honey 🍯
Dark Spot Recipe
- 1/4 cup Natural honey (unpasteurized honey or Manuka honey are great options)
- 1/8 cup Lemon juice
- 3 Tbs Green tea or green tea extract
- 1/4 cup Cocoa butter (melted) *not necessary for “Simple” recipe
- Mason jar or empty glass container with lid to store your mask
Simple Recipe (minus whipped cocoa butter):
Mix all 3 ingredients together with a whisk manually, or with a stick blender until solution slightly creams and bubbles. Apply mask in a thin layer all over face, avoiding eye lids and wear for 10-15 minutes before washing off. While skin is still damp, apply a retinoid product like our Bejeweled cream for a plant-based, natural overnight firming. Store in a glass jar (product should last 6 months to 1 yr unless contaminants are introduced when using).
*If you have oily skin, honey tends to pull out your natural oils in an, “oil purge,” causing problematic excess oil the next day. This can be remedied by applying before bed. Overtime with consistent use, your skin becomes less oily and develops a consistent level of hydration
Luxury Recipe with whipped cocoa butter:
Start with your melted cocoa butter, either melting in the microwave or on a stove top using a water bath.
Mix all 4 ingredients together in a bowl with a stick blender or emulsion blender for a few minutes. The mask solution should have bubbles and be quite hot from the cocoa butter. Carefully place the bowl into the fridge for 1 hour. Once the mask is firm and solid, it’s time to take it out to whip it with the stick blender/emulsion blender. Whip for 5 minutes or until the mask becomes the texture of a soufflé, then use a large spoon or piping bag to place it into your glass jar.
Apply mask in a thin layer, all over face, avoiding the eye lid area. Leave on for 10-15 minutes before washing off. While your skin is still damp, apply a retinoid product like our Bejeweled cream for a plant-based, natural overnight firming.
This should keep for 6 months to 1 year. If desired, you can store your jar in the fridge for a cooling mask effect but this is not necessary.

Sensitive Skin Recipe (Eczema Flair-Up)
- 1/4 cup Natural honey (unpasteurized honey or Manuka honey are great options)
- 1/4 cup Oatmeal
- 1 tsp Vitamin E (Tocopherol Acetate) oil *optional
Simple Recipe (no Vitamin E)
Take your honey and mix it in a microwaveable bowl with your dry oats. Microwave for 1 minute, being careful to watch the mixture to make sure it doesn’t boil over.
Carefully place your bowl in the fridge to cool down for about 20 minutes. Blend mixture with a stick blender, emulsion blender or whisk (try to crush the softened and heated oats to get more of the healing properties infused with the honey).
Scoop your mask product into a glass jar or container with a lid.
Apply a thin layer of the honey oats mask all over face, moving in circular motions to stimulate the blood flow to help soothe eczema. Leave mask on 10-20 minutes, really allowing it to dissolve deeply into your skin, then wash off with warm water. Do not wash face again after removing mask, you can apply a gentle moisturizer if you’d like and allow your face to rest over night.
Store at room temperature for 6 months to 1 year with proper sanitary use (scoop with spoon to use, not fingers).
Luxury Recipe with Vitamin E antioxidant & preservative
Cook your dry oats in water according to their specific brand directions. Mix the cooked oats together with your honey, and blend with a stick blender, emulsion blender or whisk (try to crush the cooked oats to get more of the healing properties infused with the honey).
Check the temperature of your mask solution, if it is under 104°F, it is safe to gently add in your Vitamin E, blending it together in your hot mixture.

*Cosmetic bleaching properties of Honey – “Honey contains the necessary ingredients for the production and successive release of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide (bleaching and exfoliating component). Hydrogen peroxide is produced in honey by the enzyme glucose oxidase and is one of the most popular ingredients for bleaching or lightening hair.”
